I don't recall ever seeing one of these arsenal packing crates for Krag Rifles in person.
A Poster, ("Cyten") on the Gunboards Forum, contributed these photos of such a crate, last night.
I have tried to 'clean up' his photos, to better read the stenciled information.
As best I can make out, it reads:
13718
(?1)0 RIFLES CAL .30 M. 9(8?)
1901 REAR SIGHTS
MANFD(?) APRIL 1901(?)
(?) SCREW DRIVERS
(????) OILERS

Re: Krag Packing Cases
I happened to be looking a Frank Mallory's "Krag Rifle Story", 2nd edition, today.
These items, on page #100, popped out at me, as never before.
There is lots of information stenciled on the crate ends, in regards to: appendages, Cleaned & Repaired, sight details, and repacking dates and procedures.
One more thing to look for!
(FWIW - I believe the '20 RIFLE' case packaged rifles with model 1902 rear-sights, with 'pop-up' apertures, and salvaged model 1898 leaf and eye-piece, altered with addition of serrations and rounding of eye-piece corners).

Re: Krag Packing Cases
Here is the end of my one and only shipping crate. I actually own one of the rifles described. During 1895, 1800 service rifles were altered to cadets at SA. They can be spotted by the relocated rod keeper and the unusual (for a TD) cartouche of "JSA/1895".
"ALTERED"
"SPRINGFIELD CADET RIFLES"
"CAL. .45. MOD. 1884"
"PACKED AUG. 1895"

Another view. The lid and all interior blocking was gone. Fortunately OM22 has full dimensioned drawings of the pieces, which I have made since the pic was taken.
How does one post multiple pictures?

Stenciling is spotty and too worn to photograph, rope handle on that end is badly worn as well
Nice example Dick!!

Dick your Cadet Rifle crate is pretty awesome!

'Cyten' gave permission to post his crate pictures on the KCA Forum. Standing next to his Krag crate was a crate for 20 Springfield Breech-Loading Rifles Cal .45CenterFire with Bayonets.
