Nice Krag M1898 Rifle Sold on GunBroker

Post by Whig »

I was watching this nice M1898 Krag rifle being sold on GB and was surprised to see the price. It was advertised as 100% original (of course!) but sure looks re-blued to me. Even the butt plate and screw heads were fresh re-blued.

I'm a little surprised, though, that it went so high. Obviously more than one person wanted a nice condition Krag rifle even though it has been re-blued and is not "original". Stock and cartouche are beautiful.

I would say that whoever bought it didn't know it was re-blued.

But, I hope the buyer appreciates it for what they paid.

That's a very nice looking rifle, especially the stock and rear sight. The last picture shows the muzzle. It almost looks like light pitting. It could be the way the picture was taken.

This vendor appears to deal in pretty "spiffy" guns, viewing his 'other items'.

I am not sure it is 're-blued'. Photographs can deceive.

They could have at least tightened the 'stacking-swivel screw' for that kind of money!

When almost all of the metal on this Krag is the same tone of clean, dark blue and even the inside screw slots are blued, I'd call that re-blued. But, I've been wrong before. If I was really wanting one, I would pay a small premium for this rifle but not more than $1500. The stock really is pretty, though!

Does seem strange to me that the metal from the front of the receiver, on back, has more of a worn patina than the barrel and bands.

As BR suggested...could be the photos???

All-in-all it's a very nice Krag rifle.

What I really dig is that Colt New Service .45 that the seller has listed...Beautiful!!!

I had looked at this rifle also. Thought that it was purdy and was curious as to how high it would go. My cosmolined 1896 is very valuable it would appear.
I also like the NS, over 2000.00 and 12 days to go.

Wow that New Service really is "Stunning!" That nitre blue on the trigger is probably the best I've ever seen. It deserves a high price.

You mind if I add your rifle to the KCA serial number database?
