The action and bolt could use a good cleaning. There appears to be a lot of dirt, debris, and grease. It is hard to detect possible problems under grunge.
The magazine cut-off is missing. This is about a $25.00 part.
FWIW - My rationale on parts value: model 1896 carbine stock with butt-plate & cleaning rods - $400, 1896 carbine hand-guard - $125, carbine barrel-band - $75, carbine saddle-ring & bar -$100 = 600 to 700 Dollars.
For the receiver, bolt, cut-down barrel and sights, add another $200.
Your stock is desirable, so it has good value.
(For a 'shooter', you can get by with just fitting a sight-blade to your present base).

Re: 1896 Carbine Questions
Thanks for the added comments. Took a good look and there is no evidence of a crack in the bolt. Plan to look into adding the missing cutoff.

Re: 1896 Carbine Questions
Apparently there is both an early and late version of the magazine cutoff for the Model 1896. Does anyone know which version will fit my gun? Thanks

Re: 1896 Carbine Questions
All U.S. Krag 'cut-off levers' will fit the model 1896 Krag action.
The correct one is the long - shaft version.
