FWIW - I have repaired and replaced bent and broken parts on various Krag rear-sights.
I have saved photos on my computer of model 1896, 1901, and 1902 rear-sights in various stages of disassembly.
Some of these pictures are posted here to assist others.
Best teacher, sometimes, is "Learning by Doing".
(However, don't take a sight apart without good reason)!

I have a retired AF Lt Col that bought a barrel from me. His solution to replacing the binding knob was to take his 01 sight and his new 03 Springfield knob to a watch repairman!

Drive out the tiny pin that retains the slide binding screw ("knob") and the screw can be removed. Screw in a new one, drive the pin back in. Done.
Here's a picture showing where to find the little pin (can be hard to see) -

Re: Various Krag sights disassembled
I made a small 'pin-punch' out of a jeweler's screwdriver.
IIRC - The pin was driven out from the rear of the Slide. (The 'domed' end of the pin is visible at the front face of the slide).
Lay the Slide and Leaf at the edge of a small piece of wood, so that the Pin and Elevation-Knob are free & clear, (and not accidentally bent or broken).
If your original Knob is broken off, the remaining shank can usually be un-screwed, once the 'retaining-pin' is removed.
A brass punch should be used on the 'domed' end of the pin, when re-seating it in the Slide from the front.

Re: Various Krag sights disassembled
Thx for the great sight pics. Had no idea how to disassemble one! Just proves this site members have a lot of knowledge and willing to share. Speaking of which I have pics of my other Krags and would like to share them and get feed back.
