Removing Krag front sight blade
Removing Krag front sight blade
I have the need to replace a Lyman front sight blade pinned into the arsenal block. Are these pins tapered, or do they drive out either way? I have an S&S replica to replace it with. I shoot better groups without a bead.

Re: Removing Krag front sight blade
The U.S. Krag front-sight pin has a slight taper. It should be driven left to right to remove and the opposite to install. (The rifle's 'Left', when aiming from the rear).
FWIW - It generally does not require much force to drive out the front-sight pin. A 'punch' can be fabricated from a 'finish nail' by spinning it in a drill-motor and shaping it with a File.
A 'Replacement' pin can be made from a suitably sized finish nail. The original sight 'pins' were not tempered.
Note - The Krag front sight blade has to be removed to take the front barrel-band off or put it on the rifle. The Krag's Stock can be removed without completely taking the front band off the barrel.
