Collecting Krag sights

Post by butlersrangers »

A fun activity for me has been collecting a range of rear-sights for the Krag at reasonable cost.

Today, I was able to finish assembling a model 1898 (three 'v' notch) rifle rear-sight from parts accumulated over several years.

I think I will put these in a display box, rather than back into the cigar box that has been their home.

Pretty nice display there Chuck! You still need the 1901 sight, along with the remaining carbine sights...

Yep, three 1901s, another 96R with the low grads, 1898C, 1902C, 1902R with and without peep, 1902/98, etc. Wonderful idea, but you're just getting started, my friend!

I do have the three 1901sights on Krag rifles and a carbine. There is a 1902 carbine sight in the photograph.

Still a challenge ahead to collect other Krag sight variations. It makes the hobby fun.

I put a recently acquired model 1896 carbine sight and 1901 rifle sight in the Display Box.

Its fun and I don't feel compelled to have every variation.

It beats keeping them in a 'cigar box' and helps tell the story.Image

Great Idea! I guess I better start doing some more "mining" in the Krag parts drawers and make a proper display also. Very nice collection.

Cool display! I casually collect rear match sights like Lyman, Redfield, etc. This lead me to an interest in Krags as I have purchased sights where the rifle was basically thrown in for free. It appears that the I'm told the M1902 sight with the peep is best for match shooting. Is that your opinion?

I personally like the 1902 better... but there are those that prefer the 1901 for matches. It's all subjective. I will say that the pop-up "Sgt Peep" on the 1902 has a hopelessly small aperture (0.04 dia.). Fortunately, CMP rules allows for a modification of the sight aperture by 0.1 dia. I replaced my original rear sight with a spare that I didn't mind modifying, and then opened the peep up to 0.07, which is about as large as you can go before you risk damaging the metal plate. At 0.07, the sight is vastly better for match shooting!

I prefer the Krag model 1902 sight for 50 and 100 yard shooting. But, surprisingly, I have not yet fired a Krag at over 100 yards.

My 200 yd. and longer range shooting has been mainly with an M1 Garand or 1903A3 Springfield.

Yesterday, I was shooting a model 1903 Springfield rifle, that I restored. It shot well, but, I didn't find the ('Buffington' inspired) model 1905 rear-sight, all that much to my liking at 50 & 100 yards. The upright leaf blocks a lot of the target area. I found it easy to line up on the wrong 'Bulls Eye'.

Different strokes for different folks!
