Meaning of "IRAN" and "humped" 1896 sight?

Post by butlersrangers »

On another forum, a learned authority on Krags and Springfield Armory uses the terms "IRAN" and early "humped" 1896 rear-sight.

I am left guessing.

"IRAN" - (inspect and rebuild as new????).

"Humped 1896 sight" - (minor difference in sight leaf pivot or slide 'v' notch??? - on early version of 1896 sight????).

I would appreciate it if someone can throw light on the meaning. Thanks!

"Humped" AKA "Lugged"???

Normal???

Difference seems to be thickness/mass of "foot" at bottom end of leaf. (I'm guessing here, so any correction from Kragnoscenti is very welcome.)

Thanks Parashooter. Nice model 1896 carbine sight and photos!

I do not have an early model 1896 sight in my collection.

None of the usual 'Krag Books' show this as clearly as your photographs.

The 'pivot/spring bearing area' of your leaf does appear to have a high hump like the model 1892 sight.

Thank you for the information.

BR,

What context was the word "humped" used? In other forums, humped is a term for a part that is faked by an unscrupulous individual.

"lugged" as clarified by Parashooter. Context was a feature of the early form of model 1896 sight that replaced the model 1892 sight.
