PC Krag stock repair ideas needed

My PC Krag stock needs some work. This is what I found when I removed the upper band. Pieces. The band was holding it all together. I've got a piece of old stock wood that I can use to repair the forend. But how do I repair the break that's starting behind the action? Thanks.

Thanks for the information, your thread was a lot of help. I repaired the crack and cut a new piece for the forend. Time will tell if I did it right.
