1898 Krag Carbine Question
1898 Krag Carbine Question
I'm looking around for a Krag to fill a hole in a modest collection of US battle rifles and came across a Springfield 1898 carbine. The only oddity is that the stock appears to have been "repaired" by very neatly plugging the area where the carbine ring should have been. Any advice for a novice? Thanks.

My advice to a novice is to find another model to fill your gap.
The Model 1898 Carbine is a "problem" item. Only 5000 were made and it is very difficult to tell what is an original piece, short of a direct hit in the SRS records (which only list around 100 or so of them).
First off, what is the serial number? If it is below 110000, or above 135000, it is almost certainly a fake. And, remember, fully 80% of the numbers in that span were not carbines to begin with - see where this is going?
