Just picked up a sporterized 1896 carbine serial number 29141. Date stamped 1895. Sadly it was nicely altered around the 1930's with a Marbles buckhorn rear sight, a new front sight dove tailed in and a clean new stock...yay for them ;-( . Does anyone know if that serial number comes up anywhere in history? Just missed being a Rough Rider gun. I would love any info anyone has.

Your, '1895' dated, Model 1896 Krag action very likely came off of a cavalry carbine. (It is all carbines around #29141).

I believe your barrel is a 1903A3 Springfield barrel made by High Standard ("H.S"). High Standard made barrels for Smith-Corona, during WW2. (S.C. and Remington built all of the 1903A3 rifles).

It was an old civilian gun-smithing practice to replace poor Krag barrels with 1903 and 1903A3 barrels. Some of the breech end was cut-off the .30-06 barrel and the barrel was re-chambered for .30-40 Krag. These barrels often shoot quite well.

How long is the barrel? HS also made replacement barrels for US 1917 Enfields.

It's a quite nice looking sporter! The stock is very similar to the stock on my sporter, which is a Bishop's. It should be a great shooter.

The "8" you can see is for 'August', there should also be two digits on the barrel for the year.

The barrel is right at 22 inches. The contour is different from my 03-A3 sporter, so not sure what it is from

What numbers are with the "8" on the H.S. barrel? It could be made from a U.S. model of 1917 (Enfield) barrel, as 'reincarnated' mentioned.
