Target type for Krag sights at 100yds
What target size, pattern and color do you find to be most effective using Krag standard issue sights at 100yds? My 1898 rifle has a 1901 sight and so far I prefer aiming through the peep with the elevation bar verticle but haven't shot it at 100 yds yet which is the limit at my club's range.

I found white 6" paper desert plates, (red is nice, too), at 100 yards is practical.
Stapled to light brown cardboard, they are highly visible.
I aim for lower edge or 'center of mass', depending on front-blade type, (and don't lose front-blade in a black bull).
They are much cheaper than commercial targets and easy to write on, too.
With a scope-sight, a black dot or swatch of dark tape can be put in middle of the plate for a fine aiming point.

Here's a great website that has a selection of official targets for different ranges and shooting.
I learned a lot just by seeing what is considered official for these competitions.
This might answer your question about what is "officially" used in addition to household items like old televisions, bottles, old dirty stuffed animals and pictures of hated politicians.

FWIW - Attached are dimensions of SR-1 Target from NRA Rule Book.
BTW - A 6 inch paper plate is smaller than the 9-Ring of SR-1.

Office Max will sell you 250 4" square "Post it's" for about $5. I have many old manilla file folders, but you can use anything white, like a paper plate to put the Post it on.Put it on square for iron sights, and on like a diamond for a scooped rifle. It also works as an aiming point for rifles that shoot a known distance high.
