Knute - Those last two links are interesting, and better yet, they both have a link to the Hathitrust and a 103 page history of the 28th Regiment, USV.

This book was compiled by W.B. Conner and published at San Francisco in 1901, soon after the 28th arrived there from the Philippines, after an adventurous year fighting Insurrectionists. There are complete Company rosters of officers and enlisted men. There are detailed reports of actions and where companies were stationed and when. A very vivid read!

A couple of takeaways:

There was no record, in the very complete documentation, of a "John Blake" in B Company (or any Company) of the 28th Regiment USV. (This was the identity given for one of the soldiers rescued by the 21st Inf. on the Island of Mindoro, July 15,1901).

Also, to Mallory's SRS listing for Krag, #167841 - 1898 Rifle - 10/24/00 - Co. B, 28th USV INF - (Lost), We can add that it was lost somewhere on Luzon, P.I.

FWIW - Most reports, I have seen, mentioning Krag rifles and carbines being recovered during actions in the Philippines, mention the number of arms, but not, the serial number. The two that Knute found makes things interesting.

I found this to be a quick read and viewable for free online, thru the Hathitrust.

Small obscure works like this convey well how suppressing the "Philippine Insurrection" was war that tried men's Souls.

It is amazing how little known the Philippine Insurrection is among the general populace. I would not have known much at all if it wasn't for pursuing Krag usage. This little known war has been touted as a precursor of the Vietnam War as far as the type of warfare involved. It too was controversial. Sacrifices made with little recognition.
