Model 1892 Krag

Post by racerguy00 »

Just joined the forum and posting for the first time. I've collected sutplus rifles for a while now but my experience with Krag's has been limited to a few sporters owned over the years until recently. I've always wanted a non-sporter.

I had seen this one on a rack at a local shop for at least a year. Finally decided to bring it home after noticing it again and i think i did ok price-wise. Image Well used but with a good bore. 1894 marked with 1896 updates like a crowned barrel, newer rear sight and replacement stock. I'm hoping to get to the range with it this weekend. Any comments and imput are greatly appreated by this Krag novice.

Low serial number and a lot of correct points for a '94. I see a bolt hold open set up that was added to it (sort of expected as very few missed the update). By the way WELCOME to KCA!
Others will be able to tell you a lot more.

A lot of 1896 upgrades. The upper handguard does appear to be of the 1892 type being that it doesn't go over the breech as much and the rivets aren't recessed. Both of these handguard improvements for the 1896 were to eliminate getting burned by the rivets and the exposed receiver in front of the extractor.

I am curious if the cleaning rod groove was filled in with a rounded or squared piece. You can tell by looking at the exposed wood at the upper band when looking down on the gun held vertically. I've been wrong before, but I bet it is of the square-type filler. Just curious.

Here is a post I started when trying to figure out what was going on with my 1892/1896 Krag. Mine is "newer" and may have had a lot of the 1896 updates before being issued. The information I received by members of this forum may help you, also.

The rounded filler piece was generally used for unissued 1892 rifles that didn't have grooves with beat up edges from field use. The squared off edges were generally used on rifles that did have beat up edges. In that case the groove was milled wider to remove most blemishes along the edges for a cleaner look. The mill used was obviously a flat bottomed type. I use the word generally as I don't know everything :D and have been wrong before. I got this info out of Poyer's book. The stock is likely a replacement. But it likely came off another Model 1892 rifle that was worked on for the updates, thrown into a bin with other updated stocks and then randomly grabbed when your rifle was being arsenal refurbished to Model 1896 standards. Does your stock still have its cartouche on the left side behind the receiver?

this first appeared over on FB, glad to see it here.

I have a real soft spot for 1896's that were born 1892's. Especially those with the filled ramrod channels. What a nice rifle.

Beautiful indeed, and and it will look even BETTER with some lemon oil for the wood, and WD40x000 wool on the metal. It will just sparkle, yet not look "over-cleaned".
