Model 1896 Value?

Post by Kerz »

All,
I have a friend in TX looking toward the possibility of getting a Model 1896. At this time, he has limited info but was wondering what a value range might be. Currently he only has two photos and uncertain about bore condition. Serial 83681.

Wrong stock. If bore is excellent (might be but doubtful) $800. If bad bore, $600. Other factors come into play, also. Eye of the beholder!

If the stock is actually wrong it is likely to cost at least $300 to replace it. Then you roll the dice on handguard matching. Certainly need more pictures and details. I would be at around $500 for a rework project if the stock is not correct.

The photos lack focus and clarity.

I agree with Whig that it appears to be a model 1896 Krag, poorly fitted into a model 1898 stock, or there is wood damage in the bolt-handle recess.
This hurts the value, because it is not a correct model 1896 Krag or it is seriously blemished. If it has an altered bolt-handle recess, the stock is messed up for use with a model 1898 Krag.

Neds valuation is certainly in the 'ballpark'. IMHO - This is a hard Krag to sell.
It would be attractive only to someone that sees it as a 'diamond in the rough' and who wants to do restoration projects.

A clear Krag model 1896 bolt-handle recess photo contrasted with a model 1898:

Remember, we all are basing our observations on two really bad photographs.

Possibly, this rifle is much nicer than it appears in the pictures?

Value is always dependent on originality and condition of wood, metal, and bore.
