A Krag barrel, I recently installed was lacking a front sight.
It was actually an original carbine barrel, but, the Armory front-base had been filed 'flush'. Only the seam of bronze brazing remained.
A crude dovetail had been filed near the muzzle and was too crooked to use.
I temporarily had a 1903 Springfield front sight on the barrel, but, had grown tired of the 'can-opener' look on a Krag.
Years ago, an unmarked commercial 'banded' front-sight base had been purchased off ebay.
It required a bit of reaming, drilling through a blind 'cross-pin' hole, adapting a Redfield blade, and fabricating a lock screw.
The 'banded' sight hides the ugly dovetail and turned-out to my liking. I found that a piece of heavy coat-hanger wire, spun in a Drill and shaped with a File, makes a nice 'tapered' cross-pin.

Re: banded front-sight job
Sorry Ned, we had company and I didn't get to complete the post, earlier.
I did try to 'fake age' things a bit, so it would look like the front-sight had been installed for a while.
There still needs to be a repair to the forearm tip and maybe a re-do of the stock finish.

On the Practical Machinist forum, they have a saying "no pictures it did not happen". Come back today there are pictures and socks to boot. Looks good as all the stuff you have been doing.

I'm sure the Norwegians have an old saying ....
"With a Krag-Jorgensen rifle, some hand-tools, and klean dry socks, Life is gut"
