I've finished de-sporterizing my carbine and all I have left to do is attach a spring clip to my handguard. I've looked around, but can't find any clips available, so it looks like I'll have to fabricate my own. It would be really helpful if I could see a photograph of one, so I can see how far around the barrel it needs to go and how wide it should be. I don't care if the picture is of a clip attached to a handguard or just sitting loose by itself. I just need something to go on. Once I make facsimile or acquire a real one, I'll have to figure out how to attach it to the handguard with copper rivets (which I can't find either).
Thanks!

Here is a reproduction handguard with a Quarter twisted inside the rear 'spring-clip'.

I hope this helps. Remember to slide the handguard on from the front sight back. Do not snap it on. This can crack the handguard. Good luck on your project.

WOW. That was fast and incredibly helpful.
I'm not sure what to use for the band. I have some stainless steel shim stock I could probably use. How thick is the steel on the clips?

I'm not in a position to measure the thickness of one this month. They are around the thickness of 'steel banding'.
The original handguard 'clips' seem to be made of spring steel.
The clearance machined into the stock for the 'clip', allows a lot of leeway on thickness.
I suppose a 'clip' could be made out of a piece of steel or brass tubing, that is slotted to clear the front-sight and expand to fit the barrel contour.
Attaching the 'clip' to the handguard wood is the tricky part. Riveting is risky, but, gluing might work.

My understanding is the rear sight needs to come off to attach the handguard. Is that correct?

Taking the rear-sight and stock off of the barreled/action allows the handguard to be slid into its rear position (from the muzzle).
A light film of lubricant or solvent, on the barrel exterior, eases sliding the handguard into place.
This approach greatly lessens the risk of breaking the handguard.
Snapping a handguard 'off' and 'on' the barrel guarantees it will eventually crack.

Didn't save an interior photo, but here's the outside of a handguard I made from scratch a few years ago. The clips were easily fabricated from steel packing bands, riveted with cut-down common nails. Wasn't terribly difficult and it held securely.

How did you expand the base of the nail to make it tight?Parashooter wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 4:44 am Didn't save an interior photo, but here's the outside of a handguard I made from scratch a few years ago. Just out of curiosity, what material did they use for the original rivets? Copper? Brass? Steel?
