Hello to the forum: I am going to do some reloading for my krag rifle and carbine. I have cast a bunch of 180 and 200 grain gas check Lyman no. 2 alloy bullets. I have unique brand powder. My question is there another powder that would work for cast and jacketed bullets? 95% of my shooting will be done with cast bullets. The jacketed rounds would be used for feral hog removal.
Thanks and happy holidays, kc
Which powder?
Re: Which powder?
Heres some load data for cast bullets from Lymans 50th edition
Re: Which powder?
Thanks for your help. Do you know if these powders work just as well with jacketed bullets as cast?
Thanks again, kc

Re: Which powder?
Weights and powders are different for jacketed bullets even at the same bullet weight.
Re: Which powder?
There are a few on this forum that shoot cast bullets. I'm sure they will respond shortly with some info. You might want to use the search tool for related information as well.

Re: Which powder?
4895 is a powder that can be used for both reduced cast loads and full power jacketed loads, in various doses.
Re: Which powder?
Thank you. I have used IMR 4895 for my 1903A3 Springfield. That is good news. I am trying to keep things as simple as possible. I will check out some loads using that powder.

I had no idea you could shoot cast lead bullets at that velocity but then I know close to zero about lead bullets. I bought a mold for my trapdoor and even cast a few bullets but have never fired the rifle. I also bought a good book about loading for the trapdoor. You've got my interest in lead bullets for the Krag.

I have found, for the Trapdoor, 405 grain lead bullets, and Accurate 5744 powder, give me the most accurate results.
