This altered Krag rear-sight just sold on eBay for around $46.
I was tempted to bid on it, since it started 'life', as a relatively rare, model 1898 carbine sight.
I have no clue as to what purpose or gun it was altered to serve? It sure looks to have been done by a 'home craftsman'.
An aperture was bolted to a three 'V' notch eyepiece. The range increments were filed off of the leaf and replaced with cut lines.
The bottom of the ("C" marked) sight-base was machined to fit some type of 'grooved' surface.
The elevation-slide and plain knob (with no slot) are correct for the model 1898 sight.
An interesting curiosity!

Re: A Different Sight
Too bad it was damaged and ruined. It is interesting. Can you put the link for the ebay listing? I cannot find this in sold items. Thanks. I would like another one of these bases. I have the carbine slide but need the correct rare base also.

Re: A Different Sight
Whig, it is one of the rarer Krag sights. I would have bid if the base had not been ruined.

Thanks for the link. You would have been fortunate to bid on that if it hadn't been ruined. Interesting alteration, though, I agree!
