My wife and I steamed past 'Arsenal Island' last Saturday on the "American Countess". We spent the day in the Quad-Cities, but could not visit the Rock Island Arsenal. It is still an active military installation and security-clearance paperwork is necessary, in order to visit the arsenal museum and buildings.
There is a National Cemetery on the Island and we heard buglers sounding 'Colors', as we cruised past on the Mississippi at 5pm.
I got a good view of the old armory building as we passed through the locks and 'swing-bridge' at the Island.

Re: Rock Island Arsenal
About 10 years ago, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to visit RIA for a week for a USMC Tech Manual project. I spent time in a couple different buildings, and wondered what those buildings were used for as they were definitely old enough!

Re: Rock Island Arsenal
Paul, as a U.S.N. Veteran, I believe you could easily get a Pass to visit Rock Island Arsenal complex.
Did you check out the museum, back then?
