I like the term "bridge" for the top connecting piece.butlersrangers wrote: ↑Sat Nov 26, 2022 5:18 am The 'hooks' of two partial barrel-band sections could lock into a 'bridge', that straddled the barrel like a saddle.
The 'bridge' would complete the barrel-band and might also serve as a sight base or scope-block?
Possible reasons to have the bridge:
1. scope mount
2. experimental quick break down
3. mirror mount for remote control in trenches (I saw a device on TV for the 1903 Springfield)
4. remember that device for target device that poked holes in a card?
5. cannot even imagine what it was for
I looked for a picture of a Conetrol cap to show how the dovetail "bridge/cap" worked, I cannot find one. I toured the factory 40 years ago when I was looking for a job. So I am the only one earth that knows how it works that has not bought one.
