K1 Pacific Sight

Post by Markt97213 »

Does anyone have (and please Post) a picture of the attachment bar for the K1 version of the Pacific Sight for the Krag?

Thanx in advance.

Mark - That is a tricky part. The visible part of the 'shaft' is just like that of the Krag model 1898 magazine cut-off, when oriented to the 'cartridge feed' position.

However, the shaft of the Pacific sight-base has an offset smaller diameter portion, that is hidden, and friction fit into the K-1 base.

This small part of the shaft is a bit tricky. Its diameter is determined by the hole in the K-1 base, but the little nub of a shaft is eccentric to the larger (visible) part of the shaft.

One could be made from a soft steel nail, a bit of filing, and epoxy glued (or JB Weld glue) into the base

When the sight is installed on the Krag, there is very little stress on the shaft. It just kind of serves as a locating pin.

The shaft is the same on both Pacific K-1 & K-2 sights.

(p.s. - The model 1898 magazine cut-off will fit and function on all Krag models).

I got out some Pacific parts and a model 1898 magazine cut-off to compare and measure.

The shaft of the 1898 cut-off lever definitely was copied for the shaft of the Pacific K-1 & K-2 sights.

The 1898 magazine cut-off lever will work on all U.S. Krags.

Some measurements from a sample of one.
(I do not have a 'loose' Pacific sight shaft and will not 'mess with' pulling one out of its base).

I do have a base that is missing parts.

butlersrangers,

Thank you SO Much!!! That's EXACTLY what I needed to know.

You said previously that there is little stress on the rod, correct?

Not having a lathe, I would just try making one out of a steel nail. (This should be adequate for strength):

Cut the head and point off a longer than necessary nail shank. 'Chuck' part of the nail in an electric drill.

File the exposed part of the nail shank, as it spins in the drill, to reduce diameter to .209".
Reverse the nail in Chuck and reduce the rest of the shank to .209".

File one nail tip to create a round 'nub' approximately .140" in diameter and .140" long. (It should be off-center by approximately 1/3).
Shape the round 'nub' until it can fit into your K-1 base.

Cut the remainder of the .209" diameter shank to 1.625" length.

Try the fit of the shaft and sight-base on the receiver, adjust till things fit.

Next, shape the other end of the shaft to match the contour of a magazine cut-off tip.

When everything appears to function and fit correctly, I would strengthen the shaft and sight-base connection with a dab of JB Weld on the small 'nub'.
Let the glue compound setup overnight before final installation.

If you have not, check the 'feed path' to make sure cartridges will pass through smooth and clear the K-1 shaft.
