Springfield Armory Service Grade 1898 Krag 335770
Listing # 8067
I think this is the first Krag I’ve seen on the CMP auction website…. Wonder how high it will go.

Fair to good condition. It's an average Krag. I rarely look at these CMP auctions because the prices are always way too high. But it is interesting to see a Krag here. First I've seen on CMP also.

It would be interesting to know how it made its way to the CMP!
IMO - At a gun show, Krag rifle, #335770, would be largely ignored and seen as nothing special and over-priced.
There is no SRS listing, but this Krag escaped being 'cut-down, being painted white, or being destroyed by the 'New Cumberland Guards'.
It is a survivor and it is interesting to see that such military 'hardware' gets returned to the government and routed through the CMP.
Thanks for posting!

The CMP website suggest that all the rifles are government surplus:
The federal law that established the new CMP authorizes the Corporation to sell surplus .30 and.22 caliber military rifles, parts and ammunition to qualified U.S. citizens “for marksmanship”.
I think this alone may be helping to drive the prices up in the auction — you’re getting an unadulterated rifle/pistol straight from government surplus inventory through the CMP. There is no other owner between you and the government — you’re the first Bubba.
I do not know if the CMP receives rifle donations from private collections….
I do know the CMP will generally furnish or provide for a small fee ($25) a record of its inventory and purchase date. I recently had the research done on a M1 Garand I bought privately to verify it was a Danish Lend Lease.

I have heard that some items have been donated to the CMP for auction. Not everything they auction has a "clean" military history!

Hi Donki!
I've got to get back to my Berthier rifle restoration. It is a well made rifle and fun to shoot!
It would be a hoot if the CMP got some Remington made Berthier, model 1905 Ross, and Remington & Westinghouse Mosin-Nagant rifles in their inventory!

Too bad the stock was shortened...The 07-15 is one of my favorite French.

I purchased a Krag at the CMP North store in 2021. I was told by the store staff that many of the Krags they had at that time were returns that had been on "loan" to veterans organizations for use in parades, honor guards, etc...
