Proto - Western/Redfield no-drill 'peep'?

Post by butlersrangers »

This interesting receiver-sight is being offered on eBay by a Gunshop. Way overpriced, but kind of unique.

I haven't seen one exactly like it before.
A few years back, I would have made an offer.
Now, it's a curiosity and a bit of a puzzle. I don't need to own it, to enjoy the challenge.

(Probably only 5 or 6 people in the World even care)!

My guess is that this could be an experimental or early prototype of the Western (later Redfield) "no-drill" model-70K sight.

It likely mounts on the left-side of a rifle with one screw.
The inside of the sight-base appears contoured to fit over the rear area of a U.S. Krag side-plate.
The mounting screw appears to have been a longer than standard Krag side-plate screw.
There is no provision for 'hooking into' the cut-off lever opening.
I think some removal of wood may have been required,
