Krag Jorgenson 1895 Carbine

Post by Sunshineboys »

Well, here I go again. Looking at purchasing this rifle. Trying my best to talk to seller who does not speak English! I asked for bore condition and if numbers are matching. I have one here so I know the front sight is correct and the rear sight also looks right. I also asked if the forestock has been cut. Waiting for a reply. I will post photos here for thoughts from those who know. Dave

I really hope this isn't being sold to you as a carbine, because this is a long rifle missing the rear handguard. Norwegian Krag carbines of the 1895/1897/1904/1907 patterns will ALWAYS have their serial & year of manufacture on the right receiver flat by the bolt handle. Your pictures don't show the front end, but does it still have the bayonet lug?

Well, I have an 1895 carbine here. Mine has the same rear sight, front adjustable sight for windage and looks like that one. Mine has the wooden piece between the rear sight and receiver ring which is missing on this one. The forestock goes just beyond the front of the rear sight base. I do now note the model and serial numbers are missing from where you say they should be and also note that it has had sling swivels added where I am thinking they should not be. Very difficult not being able to call him. Oh well. I will see if others chime in. Dave
PS….are there any other models which have the adjustable for windage front sight? This photo should help?

I am beginning to think that none of these fine rifles were left unaltered. I am thankful for the advice I get here. I will get back to him to say I am not interested. Hoping others will comment as I am trying to learn. Dave

Where are the pictures showing the front end of this rifle?

It must be a Norwegian model 1894 military rifle. The manufacture year is 1907.
The poor photo of the five digit serial number, must be 810?4, which would have been used in 1907 on a military rifle.
(Although the number at first looks like 310?4, this is likely just an illusion. The 31K serial numbers were used in 1898 on military rifles and in 1919 on civilian rifles).

The four digits on the bolt-handle do not appear to relate to the receiver and barrel number.

If this is being sold as a "carbine", it is not, logic would then dictate that it is a rifle, which someone (?) has cut-down.

Thanks ButlersRangers. I tried to communicate with the seller. No dice! It is hard to believe that anyone living in Canada cannot speak English. But….he is in Quebec! I have given up and moved on. Dave
