'altered' sight-hood

Post by butlersrangers »

On another gun forum, a new owner posted pictures of a rather nice U.S. model 1899 carbine that he purchased at a WV auction.

The front-sight was looking suspicious to me.
Then I realized, someone had altered the front-sight 'hood', by removing one of its metal tabs.
This alteration allows the hood to be removed by sliding it forward off the barrel.

The downside is nasty scratches in the metal finish of the barrel and sight-base!

I had seen photos of the sight -hoods before here. Till this post I had not realized they were meant to be semi-permanent. Makes sense now, protects the sight on a saddle carbine that goes in and out of a saddle scabbard.
