Cody Firearms Museum Krags

Post by butlersrangers »

The Cody, Wyoming, 'Buffalo Bill Museum', houses five different museums. There is much to see, and it is beautifully displayed.

Many of the firearms, that are not featured in the large theme displays, can still be viewed in large pull-out display drawers.
The see-through display 'drawers' allow decent viewing, but make photography a challenge.

Some of the military pieces came from the Winchester Factory Collection.

One that caught my attention is a model 1898 Krag rifle, serial number 225094, that has a full-length barrel, a shortened fore stock, and a smooth 'knob-less' (Mauser-like) cocking-piece.
Its front-sight blade is absent, and the stock is 'splitting' to the rear of the action.
(There was no one in the curator's office to ask about this oddity, on the day of my visit. I will have to follow up, sometime).
My hunch is that this Krag may have been a Winchester Factory 'ammunition test rifle' with some type of 'speed-lock'. The 'short forearm is interesting.

A Wall Display example - I hope these photos give a 'feel' for the displays at the Cody Museum and encourage KCA members to visit this facility.

7,000 guns, with many on display, is pretty cool!

Cody, Wyoming, would be a great venue, if there was ever to be a "KCA Convention".
