Just saw this on the Double Guns Site:

Thought the price sold would be a useful reference here. Seems a little low to me, but no mention was made of the big-name gun builders.

Re: Sporter just sold at auction
If that custom Krag sold for $600, it was a good buy! It's a Lovely old rifle.

Re: Sporter just sold at auction
Good job on lifting the photos for preservation here. Thanks.
The possible reasons for not going higher that I could think of was, the auction was not well advertised or the lack of a big-name builder. Could have been an unknown smith or very talented individual owner.\
Not sure it the price was unreasonably low for some reason, or we have been overly optimistic on adjusting for inflation when guessing what Krag sporters are worth.
Any clue what that block mounted on the barrel just forward of the receiver is? Maybe another rear sight was in the works before it was finished in the present condition?

Re: Sporter just sold at auction
Yes, I snagged and posted some of the auction photos so that your post has future meaning.
That is a target-scope block. Possibly, a second block was positioned at one of the original rear-sight screw holes?

Re: Sporter just sold at auction
I think I see an extra hole in the barrel, so scope mounts seem likely.
