In my first assignment as a young forester, I met a couple of guys who were horse loggers. They were mainly cutting props for coal mines, short logs only about 8 to 10 inches in diameter. The horses (2) would each be harnessed to a log or two up on the mountainside. Unguided, each horse would pull its load down the skid trail to a spot by the truck. One of the guys would disconnect the logs and fasten the traces to the harness, keeping it out of the way. A tap on the horse's butt told the horse it was time to go back up the mountain for another turn of logs. I thought the horses were at least as smart as the loggers. During hunting season, each horse was painted "HORSE" in big white letters on both sides and was kept in a pasture right next to the house. These guys did not work with the horses during hunting season.
