An adopted Detroit tradition

Post by butlersrangers »

Off to the bakery, tomorrow, which is "Fat Tuesday", or commonly called, "Paczki Day".
The Detroit area 'eating' has been greatly influenced by the large number of Poles, who immigrated here in the 1890s and early 1900s.

One tradition are Paczki, pronounced 'punch key', (singular is Paczek).
These are baked and consumed prior to the Lenten season, (with its 40 days of Fasting), which begins on Ash Wednesday.
This pastry probably has 5 times the calories of a 'filled' donut.

Polish households made these 'belly bombs' leading into Shrove Tuesday, to use up the butter, eggs, and rich pantry ingredients, before the lean period of Lent.

"Detroit tradition" HMMM I was thinking of automotive not something to eat.

Interesting a tradition that will give you calories to burn in the middle of winter. Kind of goes with the earlier weather report.

I was going to put a link to that winter is not over post but I could not find it.

FredC, I deleted the 'Winter' post, due to lack of interest.

Here it is again:

Lack of interest? The guys fishing has got to be one greatest photos of all time.

Jokes about poor roads, old guys having fun, and catching fish. All in one. The perfect storm of humor

Just because no one posted does not mean there was no interest. I went back to it about five times for a laugh.

That is the one.

We have deceptive springs that fool the trees into blooming early, then they get caught by late freezes. You cannot grow almonds and nectarines here because they will get fooled.

There was a hole next to an adjacent count maintained gravel road here that had about 1 foot of water in it year round. It had minnows in it constantly till they graded the ditch.

They ARE good!!! Problem is... even if you don't want to fast for lent, you HAVE to fast until those are consumed in your belly and bloodstream! LOL I usually have one a year, and then pray until my blood sugar returns from the outer space regions of my glucose meter, LOL
