Novel folding tang sight?

Post by butlersrangers »

A participant, on the FaceBook "Krag - Group", posted photos of an 'heirloom' Krag, that had belonged to his wife's grandfather.

The rifle still had its 30 inch barrel. The forestock was shortened and a commercial 'gold-bead' blade replaced the issue front-blade.

A very unique looking 'tang peep-sight' was mounted at the stock-wrist with two wood-screws.

It is a new one to me. Commercial or homemade?

Has anyone seen one of these before? Maker?

The 'Krag Poster' on FaceBook just disclosed that the tang sight on his family Krag is a Marble's 'Simplex' sight.

This allowed me to do a bit of searching. and find some information and examples.

The Marble's Simplex sight was patented around 1908 and was intended as a low cost tang style-sight for .22 caliber rifles, such as, the Steven's "Favorite".

It is evident that at least one Hunter/Shooter utilized a Marble's Simplex sight with an 'oversize' aperture disk on his altered Krag.

Here are the 'order numbers' and applications used by Marble's for the 'Simplex' sight:

Interesting, I'd never before seen one. But how about windage adjustment? What if it didn't shoot straight? Windage adjustment would require drifting the front sight, not always possible. Re the catalog listing: Most, if not all of those models had tangs that were factory drilled & tapped for tang sights.
