Welcome to the KCA club jmc0410!

Another often overlooked route is to advertise on local FOR SALE websites that allow the posting of firearm sales. I have on occasion posted Wanted-to-Buy (WTB) listings on local for sale sites with excellent success. You'd also be surprised as to what comes out of the woodwork. I met a young man, after posting a WTB, who had a sporterized Krag and was asking $120 for the gun. It was basically a parts gun except that I noticed that the rear sight was a 1901 carbine sight! I offered to purchase the the Krag, however, the fellow fessed up that he was feeling guilty about the sale because he had taken the Krag, which belonged to his girl friend, without permission...I never heard from him again.

Excess old powder in the garden is a great idea. But, I have the youngster pyromaniac still present inside of me and I like to light it up! Make long thin trails and watch it play serpentine on a piece of scrap wood. Lots of fun to have with old powder if you play it safe. But buying reloads for the components is a "Go!" with me too!

HECK YEAH!!!! Pass, Brother!

For me it is a coconut, gunpowder, and three feet of cannon fuse. Make it four feet.

We may or may not hear from the OP, 'jmc0410', again.

Some thoughtful responses have been given to the original question.
These could be helpful to multiple new members.

My 2 cents - These thoughts related to finding a 'first Krag' kind of get buried, under run-on stuff, about acquiring ammunition and disposing of gunpowder.

I would add one exception to psteinmayer's warning. Buy someone's reloads for the brass, primer, and bullet only! Dump the powder in the garden.

This is for all you newbies to Krags and visitors in general.
Absolutely right on the money!!! A good source of brass for sure... but don't ever attempt to shoot em'! Again, not knowing someone and not knowing their reloading methods and safety, you just can't be certain that they would be safe to shoot. Many times, I've seen baggies of mixed ammo at a gun show that were obviously reloads. Since I have a go-zillion rounds of brass, I smiled and walked away. However for someone in need, definitely buy them... and then follow Culp's advice and DUMP THE POWDER!!!

Paul's got more .30-40 Krag brass than I do! I only have a GA-Zillion. Paul has a GO-Zillion! That's 10 times as many!! Wow! Everyone show up at Paul's house to share his brass!

It would have been nice, if 'ideas for acquiring ammo', had been started as a separate thread, from 'how a beginner finds a Krag'.

They are relevant and valid, but totally different subjects.

It is easier at a later time, for someone to 'search a past topic', if we have stayed on the original subject.

I understand that we all want to have fun & encourage new members.
We are very willing to share knowledge, insights, and experience.

(You can always tell me where to go, the pay's the same).

OK. Back on topic. Local gun shows to you, if you have any. That is where most of my friends and myself have found our Krags over the years.
