KCA's Recent Listing Of Model 1898 Krag Carbines

Post by Whig »

I thought that I would repost the most recent updated listing of KCA's believed authentic Model 1898 carbines. This is in response to new member MAS' posting of his recent acquisition of a new possible authentic Model 1898 Krag carbine. If others agree it appears authentic, we can add it to this "master" list.

Check the new listing and pictures MAS just uploaded to KCA for your opinion.

We need more Model 1898 carbines. 13/5002= .26%. We're just shooting up in those percentiles!

I try to keep this list up-to-date. If I have missed any, please add the name and serial number to keep this going.

Believed authentic Model 1898 Krag carbines so far (Rearranged based on serial numbers):

Not sure how many 98 carbines are listed in the SRS books, Vol.2 of the Krag Rifle Story. That would be any easy why to count those numbers.
The 1898 carbine is the next krag on my hit list.

I presently have 192 numbers for 1898 Carbines, including all of those on Whig's list, gleaned from various sources - inculuding SRS - over 55 years of collecting. I have nothing higher than those noted, but several (64) below Chuck's 119744. Unfortunately. I lost the back-up notes to my list in a computer crash a few years back. While I CAN state that I thought at the time the numbers were legit, I have been reluctant to publish them because of the missing notes, but I would say the odds are that the vast majority of them are likely correct, and are thus of some value in determining likely 'clumps' of production - I did not speculate at the time, there had to have been a reason for inclusion. What is the pleasure of the group?

Keep up the good work l think this is very interesting. My wife god bless her, thinks were all nuts.
That being said l wounder what percentage of 1898 carbines were updated to the 1899 model. Is there anything stated in the ordinance reports on this.

I, being primarily a trapdoor collector, do not have any RCOs (Annual Reports of the Chief of Ordnance) from the Krag period, though I believe they may be available on line. But, an informal answer, based on the extremely low number of short-stocked 1898 specimens encountered today, is clearly "most" - and the intent was probably "all". The change was based on the method of carrying the carbine when mounted, from sling and boot on the right, to a long scabbard on the left. SA even made 32" no-sling stocks for 1896 receivers, indicating that models prior to the 1898 were to be changed over. An outlier is the few short stocks made without the sling-bar, presumably as field replacements, but one wonders why when the 32"' stock was to become the standard.

Larry's Krag carbine, serial number 131646, was evaluated a few years ago and believed to be a converted Model 1898 Krag carbine. His is added to the list below.

Dick,

I would trust your past history in having collected these numbers and add them to this list. We aren't 100% positive about all of the ones on my list, anyway, so your numbers should be good to add.

Thanks, that would bump the percentage number of represented Model 1898 Krag carbines we have here, so, that's a good thing!

119418 resides with me, 1902 carbine rear sight 1899 stock. Is the list limited to carbines in the original stock?
