AFAIK, when SA changed the sight, they would have changed the handguard at the same time. You cannot put a 1901 sight into an 1896 cutout, so there is NO way you are going to get a windage-lock scrape on an 1896 handguard. I wouldn't get all worked up over the sight anyhow - they changed them all the time and not always in the direction you would logically suspect (as in some M1898 rifles being fitted with M1892 sights! The mystery on that rifle is the cartouche vs. the bolt notch - a real potential conflict; the sight's a red herring, IMHO.

Seems to me, this thread has gotten too long and is jumping all over the place.

Couldn't agree with you more. It's like chasing a feather in a windstorm... But, if it were my rifle, I'd probably be just as persistent!

I have two responses from Alex and the CMP the CMP verified the gun did come from a Veterans organization. I'm still thinking it makes no sence to modify the stock with the 1 901 cartouche. 1901 was a turbulent time as management was changing and the Boxer rebellion came on unexpectantly so who knows. There are no remaining records with the Armory.

I cant seem to download the attachment I had but Alex did confirm the bolt is a 1898 type.

Thanks again Bob
