Trail Boss

Has any seen any load data using trail boss in their Krags. I have been searching for different rifle applications as it has very low pressure. I started searching as I have read people using it in low numbered 1903's.

The .308 Win and the .30 Krag have nearly the same case capacity (about 57 gn) and nearly the same amount of bullet protrusion from the case (about 0.8"). The two will, then, likely be close in pressure. For the .308 Win, Hodgdon lists 14.0 gn of Trail Boss under the 150 gn Nosler BT as 27000 psi with 1400 fps from a 24" barrel.

There are two other interesting low pressure loads in their .308 data, both for a 168 gn Sierra HPBT, namely 8.0 gn of either Titegroup or Clays, both producing about 1060 fps from 24" and about 26000 pressure.

Essentially, full case to the base of the seated bullet, not compressed, is the maximum load. 70% of that figure is the starting load. I have not personally run the numbers for the .30USG.

Hi, the link doesn't seem to work for me.

May i confirm then that 14gr or 70% of the fill volume of a Krag 30-40 case is an appropriate load for a 150 gr lead projectile.

Unfortunately my reloading manual does not list TrailBoss.

I poked around enough at the link above to find it, but can't link directly to it. Start load of 10gr, max load of 14gr. Start velocity 1186fps, max velocity 1477fps. Start load pressure of 25,800PSI, max load pressure of 27,100. I note this is with a 150gr jacketed bullet. With cast, velocity will be higher, pressure lower.

Brand spanking new to 30/40

I'm trying TB @ 11.5 grains (70% formula)

and 165 grain .311 hi-tech coated from Missouri Bullet...
crimping @ 2.93 "

also a 185 grain . 310 coated from Penn ( these have not arrived as yet....

What I'm after, is a comfortable plinking load that will feed reliably and hit the steel @ 50 yards maybe out to 70 yds.

I've used the 70% rule as previously mentioned. I have used TB in 13 different cartridges and honestly have not found it to be "gawd's" gift to the reloader. Accuracy for all was only so-so, but I think it works better in straight-walled cases. Mostly handguns...

I have used 9.0 and 11.0 grains of TB with the NOE 311-202-RN (210+ grains) for velocities of 1003 fps and 1107 fps respectively...

Accuracy was not great at all. I think the velocity was a tad too slow for the 210 grainer...
