A glance at DCM sales numbers

Post by butlersrangers »

No 'serial numbers', but, here is a glimpse at official figures on DCM sales of Krag, Trapdoor, 1903 Springfield, Model of 1917, Mosin-Nagant, 1905 Ross, Berthier rifles and other arms, from 1920 to 1940.

An interesting discussion of DCM Mosin-Nagant rifles and possible sporter conversions at Benicia Arsenal is going on at the GUNBOARDS forum.
The thread was started by 'Smokeeaterpilot' (Andrew), who I believe heads the Archival Research Group.
(Update - Andrew started the ARC group and co-owns it with a gentleman, who researches archives on the west coast.
There have been contributions of material by a changing cast of volunteers).

Archival Research Group documents, posted by 'Smokeeaterpilot' and 'uzidoesit89' for the U.S. Mosin discussion, provide some wonderful information about the magnitude of DCM Krag sales, by Fiscal Year.

The ARG documents, I have attached with permission, indicate a few Krags were sold by the DCM as late as 1940.

A read of these posted documents shows the DCM sold a total of 77,558 to 77,900 Krag rifles, carbines, and 'modified Krags', from FY-1921 to 1940.

Between Fiscal Year 1921 and the end of calendar year 1932:

48,826 Krag rifles, 11,945 Krag carbines, and 16,787 "modified" Krags (likely DCM-NRA carbines), were sold.

The Archival Research Group, with a focus on U.S. Military archives and documents, mainly from the early 20th Century, shows a lot of promise.
There is a $9.00 a month subscription cost, that can be conveniently cancelled, at any time.

I think, I will give this service a try for the chance to 'internet view' and use some interesting firearms data that is being revealed.

(BTW - ARG is the online source of the 'SRS Newsletter' archives, which was revealed in a recent KCA thread).

Also attached is a bonus - A WW-1 Army communication, inquiring about what to do with a batch of AEF Krags,
apparently 'turned in' to the British and stored in Calais, France.

I'm struggling to make this one "readable"; the 'spreadsheet' is too large for convenient viewing on the KCA forum.

'Red arrows' highlight the line for DCM Krag sales 1920 to 1940.

Also note, one model 1895 Winchester (lever gun) in .30-40 was sold through the DCM during this period.

Sure is difficult to read. I was surprised that the DCM was still selling Civil War era guns into the 1920s, including a Colt Revolving Rifle.

Thanks BR for this information, l purchased a few years back a 1892/96 Krag DCM rifle. Purchased by a Reserve Officer who bought it from Rock Island Arsenal in the late 1920's. I have all the original paperwork for a whopping $1.50 that included shipping.
I have been meaning to post pictures of this grouping. It's a cool item, the officer also requested a 1901 sight and handguard to replace the old model sight. Which I'm sure would of been the 1896 model sight. I have the letters for that as well.
