Value check, please.

Good day folks, new member here. I have been lurking about getting some good info on Krags for some time, but finally joined today.

I recently acquired a M98 that I am having some difficulty finding a comparable rifle value for. I think I paid a fair price, but I am not for certain. Your thoughts on the value would be appreciated.

It is a M1898 with a 1899 marked stock.

CMP did a re-work on this rifle in probably 2016 or 2017 and did the following:

• Criterion Krag barrel

• Rifle metal refinish and parkerize

• Trigger clean-up and service

• possible stock set refinish??

According to CMP, if I were to have the above work done today it would be ~ $1000+.

Muzzle wear gauge is still new/excellent. 2 Camp Perry bands on the trigger guard for 2017 and 2018 (why I assume CMP work was done just prior to competition). It shoots very well, trigger is amazing.

The bottom line is whatever price the seller and buyer come to terms. But I would not have a problem, again just me, paying one thousand to twelve hundred knowing how much work went into it when told way up front. A new barrel should shoot like a demon in CMP matches, ground hog killing, or keeping brown bears in Alaska away. I bet it is already keeping Alaskan bears away from you by merely sitting there.

My Krags failed in that because we have had two bear drive-by shootings in the last month.

IMO - You ask a tough question about a very subjective rifle.
Price & value is tied to tastes, desires, and intended use and needs.

I would say, that to a 'collector', this Krag is not very desirable, except to 'flip' it for a profit. Nothing is still original in terms of finish.

To a competition shooter, casual shooter, or performance geek, this Krag might be valued at $1200 to $1500, or maybe more (?).

Personally, I would have no interest in this rifle, unless it was bargain priced, just for its play value.

It is easy to put more money into a Krag project, than it will sell for.

Welcome! I'm an elderly accumulator, not a collector. I've been looking for a nice appearing full-length rifle. I'd buy that one for $1200 and be glad I had it, recognizing that the rebuild makes it undesirable for the purists. It would fit handsomely with my unpapered Benecia carbine and a couple of many-looped cartridge belts that I bought from S&S.
