Roosevelt Match

Post by TexTenn59 »

Ventured over to Talladega for the CMP D Day matches. Managed a bronze, could have been a silver if I hadn't dropped one outside the 5-ring in standing,,,if, if ,if.... Good practice for Camp Perry. Between now and then I'll concentrate on dry firing and shooting standing.

See you at Camp Perry!

Used 1900 stock dated Krag. 220gn Sierra round nose over 39.9gr 4350. My Krag will not feed spitzer bullets without jamming.

Thanks to Paul, reload with stripper clip went smooth!

Wayne, Greg Carter (I think you shot with him last year or the year before) may need a partner. Also, my brother-in-law Allen (I'm pretty sure you've met him in the past) is planning on shooting the sniper match with his scoped Mosin Nagant.

Looking back over the D-Day Roosevelt Match posted results:

Out of 63 shooters, there were 12 using Krag rifles. Highest score with Krag was 268 - 3X, coming in at number 16.

1903s ruled the day. Dang modern rifles.

In the very first Roosevelt Match in 2016, the match was originally intended to be just Krags only. However, a number of 1903 and (a lot of) 1903A3 rifles showed up. After a LOT of discussion... including a LOT of very loud and heated complaints (yours truly included) before the start of the match, the match participants were limited to Krags and 1903s only, with 1903A3s permitted to shoot "Out of Competition" only. Then, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, 1903A3s were not permitted on the firing line. 2020 was cancelled due to Covid, and then due to the restructuring of the program, the match didn't return to Camp Perry until this year. It's really sad that more Krags don't appear in the Roosevelt Matches because that was the original intention... to give those TR period rifles a chance to shine in competition! I had hoped that the CMP having Krags in the North, South and Anniston stores the last couple years meant that more Krags would come to the firing line, especially since last year it was known that this year would see the permanent return of the Roosevelt Match! Originally, the Vintage Rifle Match was intended to be just Krags and 1917s, until they opened it up for any manually operated foreign or domestic military rifle. Krags are certainly overlooked an awful lot... and not held in the same high regard as some other rifles, partly due to their short service life and lower ballistics as compared to other rifles of the same era. However, those of us who know different and love our beloved Krags KNOW their value in the military realm... and as long as I can pull a trigger, my Krags will continue to make a yearly appearance at Camp Perry!!! Hopefully, it will have a LOT of friends from this year forward!!!
