Re: Roosevelt Match
It is sad it did not remain that way. I am one who is tempted to also use an M1903 if for nothing else the ease of reloading and the option of using a C-stock. After talking to a local CMP Games competitor, he specifically challenged me on the use of a C-stocked 1903 in the TR Match for the simple reason it did not exist at the time period this match is meant to honor. I'll be honest, the temptation is still there but I have placed my 1903 back in the safe and pulled a Krag out of the rack and am in the process of cleaning it up for duty on Viale in a few weeks. The old girl has a bore that only a mother could love as it is ugly but hopefully will shoot well on an SR target at 200yrds. I'm not going to put any work into the wood finish until I find out whether the old girl will shoot as she is. They are beautiful rifles and I guess I will see how well she treats me. I'm going to drag it to Milan, IL tomorrow for the Bolt Gun Match and see whether I can get her on paper and walk away with a decent score. In the very first Roosevelt Match in 2016, the match was originally intended to be just Krags only.
As for making the TR Match an all Krag show... I would totally be for that. Can a Krag beat an 03... in the right hands anything is possible.

I have a friend... in fact the first guy I made a charger for... who routinely shoots in the 290s with his 1894! He'll be at Perry this year as usual... probably winning the match!oney wrote: Fri Jul 03, 2026 2:32 pm As for making the TR Match an all Krag show... I would totally be for that. Re: Roosevelt Match
I wish I had discovered the CMP matches at Camp Perry years before I did (thanks to Madsenshooter for introducing me to match shooting in 2012!). The one thing I regret is not getting to do this with my dad. Back in the late 90s or early 2000s, he would have still been able to shoot prone and it would have been something he would have loved to do! By 2012 when I got started, it wouldn't have been comfortable for him to do at 80... and now at 93 and suffering from serious dementia and nearing EOL, all we can do is talk about it (which he forgets after a few minutes anyway). I am fortunate in that I introduced this to my own son... and I cherish these moments together, and will continue to do it with him as long as I'm able!
I also wish you could shoot with us Dick... I would love to finally meet you in person and shake your hand!!!

It would be wonderful if we could all meet at a convenient location, bring a favorite Krag, have a fun social weekend-event, and fun shooting match!

Re: Roosevelt Match
It surely would. Before retiring, I made several trips east, and always tried to make my business appointments on a Friday or a Monday, so I could visit or sightsee on the weekends. Put a lot of faces with names like Frank Mallory, Joe DeChristopher, even Graham Burnside (sadly all passed now, except Al Frasca) and made it to a number of CW battlefields, etc...

Re: Roosevelt Match
I'm fortunate in that I've met several people from here... and befriended many! I'm so sad that I never got to meet Eric (Parashooter) in person after the many phone conversations that we had! I'm blessed to know Chuck and see him often... and equally blessed that he and his amazing wife turned out to be good friends with my father long before we met and discovered that fact!!! I do hope we can do a Krag fun meeting somewhere sometime in the near future so I can shake many more fellow KCA hands!!!
