1898 Carbine

Post by Top Dean »

Hey guys I saw what was billed as a 1898 carbine, looked great but had a rifle site on it and the guy want to argue that it was the correct site and he only want $3000.00 for it, way too much, it did have a 98 cartouche. He was stating they made 5000 98 carbines, could not remember if they mad any, please advise. I also saw many nice rifles today many in the 8-1500 range, even saw on rifle with a carbine hand guard he only wanted 8 for it.

Also it was configure to look like the one you have pictures of in the photo section what would be the correct site for this rifle and what would be the correct serial number range for the carbine?

The 5000 M1898 Carbines originally had 30" stocks and M1896C rear sights.

They were in the 112-135xxx range, but are very hard to pin down as 100% sure - there is always a bit of worry as the fakers know it is a "rare" model and the parts can be found.

$3000 is high, but not totally out of line for a very nice 100% right one - the example you saw with the rifle sight was being pushed by a BS artist!

Some artists work with film, some with paint, charcoal or pastels. Some artists carve wood, shape metal or clay. Some 'artists' work with clay substitute!

What I thought at the time if I see the gun again I will get more info thanks guys, the site was a dead give away, plus some of the parts were too new to be correct for the gun.
