I have found the side plate on the Krags is also the feed ramp for 220 grain bullet. There is a longer surface for the nose radius to glide forward to the chamber. And where the side plate and the receiver mate might not be flush to each other a spitzer bullet gets hung up because a point is not a radius. It is like it is digging into the crack. I have a some times hanging issue with my '96s and later models using the Sierra 175 match kings and not as much on the 1894s.
I am guessing a full metal jacket round nose bullet would give zero problems. It is also a guess that a soft point round nose bullet could hang on feeding due to where the side plate and receiver mate thanks to the exposed soft lead.
I solved my feeding problems by hitting the 175 SMKs with a hammer and bending the points to one side.
