Agree with all of the above, and also want to point out that the rear sight (M1901) appears to be on backwards AND with the improper hand guard (M1898/1902) which has a different footprint. If sold as a carbine, you definitely should try to return. I'd also suggest you get Poyer's little book for $20 or so....

Roger that, that is my new plan. After some of the experiences I've gained over the few years, I knew better that putting cart before horse. :( Thank you for the interactions!

I was not sure if North Cape Publications was still in business after Joe Poyer's passing a few years ago, but they are - however, the Krag book is now $35.... WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY.

To all that helped, dealer took it back although he was huffing and groaning that he knows his stuff and you guys were wrong. He refunded me and I told him to keep $50 as my fee for the knowledge gained. Anyways, lessons learned I guess.... I don't kind learning them.

Thanks everyone, as suggested, I will go hunt an 1899 carbine using this site and check out the book the last poster mentioned, $35 seems pretty fair.

I assume this book covers all these features I can use to authenticate one? (Not just a history book)

Welcome saxxdog. You were fortunate to be able to return the Krag and get a refund. The $50 was a cheap education but it could have been a better investment to buy the Poyer's book. It's not perfect but an excellent reference to learn about many details about Krags to help you make a better decision. There are Model 1896, Model 1898 and Model 1899 Krag carbines. The Model 1899s, as mentioned above, are the most available and affordable. Great carbines, just try to find a reasonable one with a true carbine rear sight. Ask questions here also. We've been through many of these ourselves and can answer most questions you might have. Good luck in your search. The real carbines are nice Krags to play with!

Thank you Whig. I will get the poyer book, found the third edition on eBay for 30.

I found an 1896 krag later at the same show and got a good schooling on that models features from a much better seller. It was listed at 3200 and had lots of finish even. Had to walk for now but I may contact him on a month or two and re discuss.

$3200 is on the high side unless it has some special provenance.

I figured as much, typical show price. It's story written on the tag was it was in the serial number range for Roosevelt's charge up the hill. I don't take a lot of stock in any of those...I don't buy stories! It was in nice condition, lots of finish, sling ring, etc. I imagine a phone discussion in a month or two will bring it down some anyways.

There’s a couple of legitimate 1899 carbines for sale on GB right now. One is currently $800 and another a few hundred more. There’s also a constabulary carbine used in the Philippines that has some interest but currently just under $1,000.Not many of those around. A true 1896 is quite the first step into carbines. Unless money is no concern, I’d lean towards an 1899 carbine and enjoy it.
