Hi,
I got this rifle for Christmas, it belonged to my wife's grandfather.
I've studied a little on the web about these and watched some youtube videos.
There are so many variations my head is spinning.
I would appreciate any general and/or specific information you all would be so kind as to share.
Thanks.
I'll post images next

craggy joe: Welcome to the Forum! You have a Model 1896 Krag Rifle that was shortened and turned into a nice 'Sporter' a long time ago. The rear sight is a Lyman No. 34 (worth about $150). The front sight is a replacement band type of economy quality. Your barrel is anchored with a nice barrel-band, a good feature. I can't tell if your stock was 'new' or a recycled military stock. The butt-plate is a commercial Neidner style. The whole rig is probably worth $300 to $450. Enjoy!

It has been 3 years since I got this rifle.
I finally took it to the range recently.
It performed beautifully.
An old timer who was there recognized it as an antique but didn't know exactly what it was. I told him what little I knew about it.
Then I offered to let him shoot it and he did.
He racked it, looked up and smiled. That action always gets people. :)

'craggy joe' - It was kind of you to let an interested 'old timer' shoot your Family Krag.
I'm glad you got around to shooting it yourself!

Thank you sir.
I brought my son out to the range today and we fired it up again.
Shoots fine.
