1898 Military Restoration

Post by Thomassen »

Now that I've found that my 1898 can perform at the range I can now seriously think about restoring it. It has has it's original 30" barrel.

Original stocks are way to pricey. I'm looking at replacement stocks: Boyd's, S & S, Macon, and Bob's Gun Shop in AZ. I've read reviews on all of them except Bob's. Anyone use his stocks? Thanks for your help in advance.

I haven't heard about Bob's... but I have heard that a couple people went with Boyd's and were rewarded with a stock that looked as if it was carved with a chainsaw...

I've used Bob's forend replacement's and had excellent results. Nice American walnut and very close to dimensions. Don't know about full stocks though.

Bob's Krag rifle and carbine stocks list at $150 without the handguard/forend. The Forent lists at $55. You need to cut inlet for the sight and add springs/rivets. He does not list a specific year for his Krag stocks.
