Krag Bayonet Plus 6 Inches

Post by Knute1 »

Fiscal year ending 6/30/1905, the Chief of Ordnance Report has shown that the Krag bayonet lengthened 6" was adopted for the 1903 Springfield, which had a 6" shorter barrel length than the Krag. Pretty logical, but other designs had been considered. Maybe I was dreaming, but I thought I seen a movie clip of President Theodore Roosevelt "jousting" with somebody using a rod bayonet and managed to break his opponents rod, proving a point (pun intended).

Here is a link from that report, starting on page 75:

Want to feel like a pikeman? Put an '05 bayonet on a full-length Krag.

There you go. Photographic evidence American bayonets once again copied the Swiss lead .... the Swiss Army bayonet/mine detector/tooth-pick/bore-brush!Image

Don't know why, but I always cringe when I see a cavalry charge into a wall of pikes. I hates pikes!

Lately on the ranch I have been keeping a nice sharp shovel on the four wheeler and carrying it when walking through tall weeds and grass. It works just as well at killing rattlers as my Bond Snake Slayer, with the advantage that a bayonet had. The shovel does not run out of bullets either! The shovel has a fiberglass handle and I do not care if it gets rained on, another advantage.

Before large "National Armies" became the norm, governments hired Mercenary Armies. Soldering was a profession and certain nationalities had their specialties:

The Best Pikemen were Swiss Mercenaries.

(Ironically, the best crossbow men came from Genoa, Italy).

..... and God help you if you were slow or unable to pay your hired troops.
(It was also a pain to get rid of them after your war).
