1898 Extractor Questions and a swivel question

Post by Randy Dalton »

I have two questions about the extractor on an 1898 Krag rifle. Is it supposed to be blued? Both of my 98's have what looks like a cold blued extractor...

Secondly, how do you remove the extractor from the cocking piece. I am nervous about beating on the pin with a punch.

One more question... if I tighten the front stacking swivel screw and the rear band screw even hand tight, the swivels will no longer swivel. Is this normal or not?

Thanks for your expertise.

The extractor was finished by the niter blue (chemical) process - this results in a rather "thin"-looking, often very "bright" blue, or purplish, tone, totally unlike that of the barrel which was rust-blued to a much darker color.

The extractor rivet can easily be tapped out from the top. A bit of penetrant, and working the arm back and forth wouldn't hurt. Some can be pressed out with the thumb.

The swivel situation is, unfortunately, fairly "normal", and is basically due to wood shrinkage and/or dryness over the years. Some guns have it worse than others.
