Krag carbine or cut-down rifle?

Post by pikappa »

I've recently purchased what seems a Krag 1896 carbine, but here are some facts that puzzle me:

- dimensions/characteristics of barrel and stock are those of a carbine, but there is no saddle ring and bar. Instead, sling swivels are present

- s/n 49956: should be in the 96 rifle number range, according to Mallory's book

- stock is dimensionally a true 1899 carbine stock (not a cut down) with rounded inlet for the bolt handle: of course it lacks arsenal cartouche and "P" proof mark. There is only a two-digits mark behind the trigger guard.

- Stock has been stamped with U.S. and s/n

- Sight blade is of unknown type (for me, at least), and sight is a model 1902 with "sargeant-peep" device.

What should I think? It seems logical to think of an arsenal cut-down rifle fitted to a replacement carbine stock, but any suggestion will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
