.30 U.S. vs. 7x57

I don't want to hijack Ben Luoma's post which was a request for documented facts for a report so, in your opinion what were the advantages and disadvantages of the standard U.S. service rifle and cartridge over those of Spain in 1898.
I suppose we can throw into the mix that many of the U.S. volunteers were armed with the .45-70 Springfield single shot and many of the spanish troops had the 11 m/m Reformado Remington rolling block. It can be taken as a given that the Mauser design was open to much greater product improvement and simplification of production than the Krag design though I don't know that the same thing could be said of the cartridge, at least in a bolt action rifle.
