Safe to use commercial ammo?

Post by DanAW »

Given a properly functioning Krag, is it safe to occasionally shoot commercially available ammo from a major manufacturer?

Most of the rifles chambered for the .30-40 cartridge are Krags or other designs of similar strength so commercial loadings are designed with the Krag in mind. U.S. cartridge manufacturers tend to be quite conservative in their loadings as well.

I have many different Krags in my collection. I shoot reloads from my long rifles to try to keep close to military specs so the sights are on. I use 180 grain factory loads in all of my different sporters. I have never had any problems shooting the factory loads and have very good results in deer hunting and target shooting. I use Remington and Winchester and have good luck with both and have noticed no difference between the two.

So, I say, "go ahead and shoot them and have fun"

Best regards,

Tom
