Constabulary Carbines . . . .

Post by Gary_Peer »

. . . or for the purists, M1899 Carbine modified for knife bayonet and sling. I recently acquired one which appears to be "legit." What's interesting is that it has a M1898 receiver that has the "8" overstamped with a "9." Mallory makes a brief mention of this in the "Krag Rifle Sory" and shows a photo. He does not elaborate as to whether this was done for M1899s in general or only when converting for Constabulary/military school use. The serial number is 231,332, which appears to be in a block of 1898 rifles, however, it is interesting to note that there is a "Constabulary" carbine number 231,178 in the springfield Armory collection (also in the rifle block).

Does anyone have any insight as to what the circumstances were that caused the overstamping?
