Krag identity

Post by Sam Ainsworth »

Gentlemen: I have a 1898 Krag that appears to be a cut down rifle. Serial number is 217913. The front sight has been replaced with a ramp and it was drilled and tapped on the side for a scope mount. It has been reblued (very good job). The forend of the stock has a nearly square wood piece inletted into the end. The stock has few dings and overall the condition is very good. Bore is excellent. Don't know if it shoots.

Your assistance in identifying this would be appreciated. Value also.

Many thanks.

Sam,

This is a very polite and well-worded post. Thank you.
I just wanted to let you know that I moved your classified ad to the "member's classifieds" area first as is stated in the directions at the top of the classified section. Please read directions.

Regards,

Tom

Your Model 1898 rifle was manufactured in 1899. There is no information on it at the Springfield Research Service website; however (and this doesn't mean anything), serial numbers all around yours (the closest being 217929) were issued to Co. G 40th USV Inf.

My apology, Tom. You are right: I didn't read the directions. Many thanks for correcting the problem.

Thanks to you also, Gunbarrel, for the information.
